Market day: hawkers of leather goods, masks, hot-roasted corn; religious processions of priests and crosses; the church a mixture of Roman Catholicism and paganism; and the glorious colours of textiles worn by the descendants of the Mayans. This is Chichicastenango, Guatemala, a town difficult to pronounce but exciting to visit.
