Quality and versatility
10 November 2006 - Dubai, U.A.E.: Richard Chong, Senior Manager of Hong Kong-based Vicwood Group is keen to emphasise the quality as well as the versatility of his engineered wood veneers and timber. “There can be a perception that products from China are cheaply made. This is not true, as the neighbouring factories in Suzhou for Sony and Canon can prove.”
Although Vicwood now has over 7,000 employees at the 1.7km2 factory in China, the family company's 45-year history is international, based in North America, the Philippines and Hong Kong. The company produces recomposed wood veneers and timber. While the variety of design and colour will allow designers flexibility, the company also aims to protect the environment.
Chong said: “We are a company with a green philosophy. We take wood that is plentiful and grown in plantations and under SGS certification, and use it to create the effect of the rare hardwoods, whose numbers are rapidly reducing. Designers can then use these wood effects in their designs, but without using the scarce resources.”
Vicwood takes woods, such as African white wood, decomposes it, dyes and presses it, to produce a range of veneers that are 97% wood. Chong said: “We currently have over 400 different designs including teak, cherry, rosewood, zebrawood, ebony and walnut.”
Another advantage of the recomposed wood is the consistency of colour. As Chong explained: “With a wood such as walnut, sometimes only 40% of a shipment can be used, as the colour varies so widely. We can offer complete consistency in all the shipment.”
Defect-free hardwoods made in China
1 January 2006
: A new product offering uniform, defect-free veneers and lumber in a wide choice of patterns, colours and species is now available from Vicwood Industry (Suzhou) Co. Ltd., the highly reputed, large timber products manufacturer in China.
Reconstituted Veneer is manufactured using rotary peeled veneers of light coloured timber species, which are dyed, glued to E1 emissions standards, aligned in a mould, pressed and cured to form a block. The result is an engineered hardwood flitch that is uniform, free of defects and available in a huge range of patterns, from quarter-sawn White Oak to Bird's eye Maple.
There are three or four companies in Europe who continue to produce a certain volume of reconstituted (composite) flitches for slicing into veneer, but Vicwood is by far the world's largest manufacturer and has invested heavily in research and development. In addition to slicing veneer-grade blocks for veneers, the Group also produces sawing-grade blocks for sawing into lumber, offering the obvious advantages of perfectly matched veneer and lumber.
Sliced Reconstituted Veneer is ideal for the mass production of doors, flooring and furniture where the same pattern and colour can be replicated and where waste can be minimized. Sawing-grade Reconstituted Lumber has the advantage that it can be produced in large specifications (any thickness and any width up to 24 inches (640mm)), which opens up a wide range of possible uses. Many manufacturers are also ripping the lumber down to small sizes to produce decorative mouldings and door jambs.
Given the detailed and lengthy manufacturing process, Reconstituted Lumber is obviously not a cheap product when compared to 2inch x 6inch (50mm x 150mm) and wider natural Sapele or Beech. However, when you consider species of high value or those limited in volume, such as Teak, Wenge, Cherry or Walnut, and when you take into account the waste factor when processing solid wood, the cost of Reconstituted Lumber will be similar or even lower.
Furthermore, the product offers tremendous versatility. What about Bird's-eye Maple, Ebony, Zebrawood or Burls? The availability of Reconstituted wood products in these patterns offers significant savings and new opportunities. And if you want blue Oak, it can be achieved by altering the manufacturing process.
Plywood and flooring
In addition to its cutting-edge Reconstituted Lumber technology, Vicwood is also one of China's largest plywood manufacturers, with well established worldwide markets for ordinary and fancy plywood, blockboard, doorskins, rotary constructional veneers, decorative natural and engineered veneered boards and mouldings.
The Group has also developed an exciting range of prefinished engineered flooring products in both solid and overlay reconstituted as well as natural species.
Vicwood is one of the world's most innovative timber producers, with a long history of quality and reliability. For more information on how you can import and distribute engineered veneer and flooring, African solid flooring and fancy plywood from Vicwood Group's mills in China, contact us
